SMI is an artist member organization that provides exhibiting opportunities to our emerging, established, and underrepresented artists. We strive to bring stimulating and high quality exhibitions to the northern New Jersey area. Every show is curated or juried and undergoes a highly competitive selection process. Below are listings and descriptions of venues we currently use.
Academy Square Galleries
33 Plymouth Street Montclair, NJ
1st & 2nd Floors
Central to SMI’s mission is enriching Montclair and the surrounding communities by providing a free and local venue to view notable artwork by professional contemporary artists. Academy Square, located at 33 Plymouth Street, is a Gold LEED certified, adaptive repurpose of a former school building. The galleries are a quick stroll from downtown Montclair’s vibrant restaurants and shops.
Academy Square‘s wide, well-lit hallways are used as an alternative space for many SMI exhibitions. The Virginia S. Block Gallery was established in 2003 to honor Studio Montclair co-founder and first president Virginia Schaffer Block. It originally was located in the Clark House at 108 Orange Road until mid-2010. Today, the second floor of Academy Square continues this tradition.
Montclair Public Library Gallery
50 S. Fullerton Ave, Montclair, NJ
Twice a year, SMI partners with the Montclair Public Library to curate or jury exhibitions in their gallery space. This bright, dedicated public space is ideal for SMI’s Portfolio Series and community outreach shows. The library’s large conference room, connected to the gallery area, enables us to have programming for many of our exhibitions.
Aljira, A Center for Contemporary Art
591 Broad St., Newark, NJ
Since 2011, SMI has partnered with Aljira to exhibit ViewPoints—our annual international, juried exhibition. With 15-foot ceilings, 2,000 square feet of space, adjustable lighting, and movable walls, Aljira provides a wonderful space for this prestigious show. This dynamic gallery is located just a few blocks from the Newark Museum and NJPAC.
Our Exhibition Committee
SMI is grateful for our energetic and committed volunteers. Our Exhibition Committee works with curators and artists to produce professional exhibitions showcasing contemporary artists with and without gallery representation.
